Collegiate 4-H Facilitators provide leadership for key components of the National 4-H Conference. Facilitators lead delegates through team building activities, “citizenship excursions” as well as round table discussions —which leads to the recommendations that youth provide to the Secretary of Agriculture and others to strengthen the 4-H Youth Development Program.
NATIONAL LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITY – 2008 National 4-H Conference
The National 4-H Headquarters is pleased to announce an opportunity for Collegiate 4-H Members to serve as Collegiate Facilitators at the 2008 National 4-H Conference in Chevy Chase, Maryland. The conference will be held from Saturday, March 29 – Thursday, April 3, 2008. Collegiate Facilitators will be required to arrive Thursday, March 27 th and depart on April 3rd.
This year’s conference promises to be an exciting event for all involved, as more than 400 delegates from across the country come together to explore the theme “Green A.I.D. – Acquire, Inform, Deliver”. The theme reflects the question, “As society becomes more environmentally conscious, how can the 4-H Youth Development Program “A.I.D.” in enhancing socially significant and relevant programming to increase the environmental awareness of our clubs, our communities, our country, and our world.”
Collegiate Facilitators play a key role throughout the conference as they lead delegates in a variety of team building activities, round table discussions, and lead “citizenship excursions” through D.C. Facilitators will undergo training in facilitation techniques as well as develop skills in leading groups on field trips, through icebreakers and team building exercises.
Facilitators are expected to participate in all activities during the Conference and will depart on April 3. All travel expenses will be reimbursed. Meals and lodging are provided as part of the conference.
4-H Citizenship Washington Focus Program Assistant Summer Internship (CWF PAs)

Job Summary: A National 4-H Council Program Assistant will become a licensed Class B Tour Guide for the District of Columbia metro area and will facilitate National 4-H Council’s educational curricula to groups of youth from across the country. These job functions are accomplished in collaboration with each group’s coordinator as well as Council program staff and planning staff. National 4-H Council programs are intense and exciting learning experiences for youth and adults from all over the United States and the world. Program Assistants make these programs successful by using their skills and knowledge to help the participants have the most educational and fun experience possible in Washington DC and at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center. The hours of a Program Assistant are very long, usually between 50-60 hours a week, and often include evenings, weekends and holidays. Program Assistants for the Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) programs must be able to successfully fulfill the requirements of the D.C. Tour Guide License. Applicants must:
Have experience in leadership roles, public speaking, and presenting
Be flexible and work well under pressure and with others
Be at least 18 years old and no older than 25
Have at least a high school diploma or equivalent, with education beyond high school preferred. Courses in political science, communications, history, and education preferred
Be a citizen of the United States
Be able to read, write and speak the English language
Pass a satisfactory background check
Successfully complete the tour guide exam and meet the medical and physical requirements of DCRA
Specific CWF P.A. Roles
Tour Guide: Program Assistants lead trips into the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, and provide commentary on points of interest throughout the city, so that participants learn from these educational opportunities. PA’s are the primary liaison between the National 4-H Youth Conference Center and each group during their stay at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center.
Program Facilitator: Program Assistants lead educational workshops conducted at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center. This role may include checking the arrangements for room-set-up, audio-visual, entertainment, speakers, transportation, field trips, workshops, recreation, and developing specific curriculum for ongoing programs. PA’s facilitate educational curriculum focusing on civic engagement and citizenship. PA’s must also meet with adult and group leaders where they assist and orient groups as they arrive, help to provide recreational and other free-time activities for participants, facilitate workshops, and other program needs.
Terms of Employment The agreed upon salary is $300 per week. PA’s are required to reside in provided housing, at The National 4-H Youth Conference Center, Gertrude Warren Hall, group housing. Dates of employment are May-August. Travel to and from Washington is at the PA’s own expense.
National 4-H Curriculum Summit Collegiate 4-H Facilitators announced!
Congratulations goes to the following Collegiate 4-H members who were selected as Collegiate 4-H Facilitators for the National 4-H Curriculum Summit being held in June. They were selected from dozens of enthusiastic Collegiate 4-H members from across the nation to represent us and assist National 4-H Headquarters in hosting this event.
Collegiate 4-H Members Aid National 4-H Conference
Contributed by April Mendenhall, 2007 National 4-H Conference Collegiate Facilitator, Arizona 4-H alumni and Colorado State University Collegiate 4-H President This year members of Collegiate 4-H clubs from across the country participated as facilitators at the National 4-H Conference. The conference was held at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland. These members acted as leaders of discussions and helped to teach 15 to 18 year old high school students about the many aspects of the 4-H program and citizenship.
Collegiate 4-H members led round table discussions with the delegates, encouraging them to think about issues facing their generation and what it really means to be a citizen of the world, not just of their country or their community. They also discussed changes to the 4-H program as a whole, and taught them new ideas to take back to their own communities and clubs.
These facilitators also led their groups through Citizenship Excursions—structured activities, discussion and reflection about citizenship while visiting a mix of monuments, memorials and museums in the Nation’s Capitol. Sites included the Holocaust museum to discuss why it is important not to remain silent, Arlington cemetery to reflect on the cost of being free, the Lincoln memorial to consider Lincoln’s dedication to freedom for all men, and many more. The delegates were questioned about the impact these monuments had on them, and why they are important to learn about, the impact their meaning has on the world. The facilitators encouraged their groups to think of themselves as citizens of the world, and how to make the world a better place, not just their home country. “We all must work together to make a difference!”

Collegiate 4-H members needed to help staff the National 4-H Curriculum Summit
Over the next year, the National 4-H Curriculum System will be undergoing major changes in the ways that curricula are developed and implemented. A National 4-H Curriculum Summit will convene June 12-14 at the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase, MD, to provide momentum for 4-H faculty and staff to foster improvements as we transition 4-H national curriculum processes.
We are looking for 12-15 dedicated Collegiate 4-H members to work with the planning committee as meeting hosts and facilitators. Travel, accommodations and a small stipend will be included. Interested Collegiate 4-H members should complete an application and submit with a letter of recommendation to natl4hjury@csrees.usda.gov no later than May 1, 2007. National 4-H Conference seeks Collegiate 4-H members to serve as Collegiate Facilitators
National 4-H Headquarters, USDA is looking for Collegiate 4-H members to provide leadership for key components of the 2007 National 4-H Conference.
In addition to facilitating round table discussions—which lead to youth recommendations that are shared with the Secretary of Agriculture, Extension professionals, and others—collegiate facilitators are critical to the success of Citizenship Excursions. • Collegiate facilitators arrive at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center (Chevy Chase, MD) by 7 pm, Friday, March 23. • Facilitation training is provided Saturday, March 24. By evening, facilitators lead icebreakers with their round table participants. • Facilitators assist with conference programming including assisting with structured educational excursions in the Nation’s Capitol through the Town Hall Meeting on March 27. • Facilitators are encouraged to stay in town for Capitol Hill Day, ending with a dinner/dance cruise on the Potomac River on March 28. All participants depart by Thursday, March 29. • All travel expenses are reimbursed. Meals and lodging are provided as part of the conference program. Facilitators also receive a modest honorarium for their contributions.
