Collegiate 4-H Facilitators provide leadership for key components of the National 4-H Conference. Facilitators lead delegates through team building activities, “citizenship excursions” as well as round table discussions —which leads to the recommendations that youth provide to the Secretary of Agriculture and others to strengthen the 4-H Youth Development Program.

NATIONAL LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITY – 2008 National 4-H Conference

The National 4-H Headquarters is pleased to announce an opportunity for Collegiate 4-H Members to serve as Collegiate Facilitators at the 2008 National 4-H Conference in Chevy Chase, Maryland. The conference will be held from Saturday, March 29 – Thursday, April 3, 2008. Collegiate Facilitators will be required to arrive Thursday, March 27 ^th and depart on April 3^rd.

This year’s conference promises to be an exciting event for all involved, as more than 400 delegates from across the country come together to explore the theme “Green A.I.D. – Acquire, Inform, Deliver”. The theme reflects the question, “As society becomes more environmentally conscious, how can the 4-H Youth Development Program “A.I.D.” in enhancing socially significant and relevant programming to increase the environmental awareness of our clubs, our communities, our country, and our world.”

Collegiate Facilitators play a key role throughout the conference as they lead delegates in a variety of team building activities, round table discussions, and lead “citizenship excursions” through D.C. Facilitators will undergo training in facilitation techniques as well as develop skills in leading groups on field trips, through icebreakers and team building exercises.

Facilitators are expected to participate in all activities during the Conference and will depart on April 3. All travel expenses will be reimbursed. Meals and lodging are provided as part of the conference.

Reminder: ACCESS 4-H is part of our regional service project! Participating in this is just one way that your club members can help. It will only take about 3 hours in January to contribute to the future of 4-H everywhere! Late applications may be accepted if they’re received soon!

Please share this exciting national opportunity with your Collegiate 4-H members, 4-H teens, college-age 4-H alumni, volunteers, and staff! The ACCESS 4-H focus groups will provide key guidance for the creation of a new 4-H online environment that provides information, interaction and instruction to all audiences of the 4-H community.

ACCESS 4-H is looking for visionaries to help explore and design the idea of an online community that 4-H has been asking for, one that tells the world our stories and our impact while connecting the 4-H community nationwide in ways we’ve never explored. You are the experts. Having been involved day-to-day with 4-H, you have the insight, wisdom and knowledge to design a whole new way of connecting.

Responsibilities:

We will gather for a short series of telephone and online collaborations (between January 7-18) resulting in a brand new 4-H online community. Following the 2 weeks of focus groups, focus group participants will be offered the chance to be among the first to test and try out the new ACCESS 4-H.

Eligibility/Criteria/Application:

All we need is 1-2 paragraphs explaining your 4-H background and your interest in bringing 4-H up to speed with what you need online. We’ll also need your contact information (name, age, home state/county, phone number, email address).

Looking for a summer job? Want to work for 4-H helping thousands of 4-H teens learn citizenship and leadership skills in our nation’s capitol? How does DC for the summer with free room and board sound to you?

Job Summary:
A National 4-H Council Program Assistant will become a licensed Class B Tour Guide for the District of Columbia metro area and will facilitate National 4-H Council’s educational curricula to groups of youth from across the country. These job functions are accomplished in collaboration with each group’s coordinator as well as Council program
staff and planning staff. National 4-H Council programs are intense and exciting learning experiences for youth and adults from all over the United States and the world. Program Assistants make these programs successful by using their skills and knowledge to help the participants have the most educational and fun experience possible in Washington DC and at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center. The hours of a Program Assistant are very long, usually between 50-60 hours a week, and often include evenings, weekends and holidays.
Program Assistants for the Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) programs must be able to successfully fulfill the
requirements of the D.C. Tour Guide License. Applicants must:

• Have experience in leadership roles, public speaking, and presenting
• Be flexible and work well under pressure and with others
• Be at least 18 years old and no older than 25
• Have at least a high school diploma or equivalent, with education beyond high school preferred. Courses in political science, communications, history, and education preferred
• Be a citizen of the United States
• Be able to read, write and speak the English language
• Pass a satisfactory background check
• Successfully complete the tour guide exam and meet the medical and physical requirements of DCRA

Specific CWF P.A. Roles

Tour Guide:
Program Assistants lead trips into the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, and provide commentary on points of interest throughout the city, so that participants learn from these educational opportunities. PA’s are the primary liaison between the National 4-H Youth Conference Center and each group during their stay at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center.

Program Facilitator:
Program Assistants lead educational workshops conducted at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center. This role may include checking the arrangements for room-set-up, audio-visual, entertainment, speakers, transportation, field trips, workshops, recreation, and developing specific curriculum for ongoing programs. PA’s facilitate educational curriculum focusing on civic engagement and citizenship. PA’s must also meet with adult and group leaders where they assist and orient groups as they arrive, help to provide recreational and other free-time activities for participants, facilitate workshops, and other program needs.

Terms of Employment
The agreed upon salary is $300 per week. PA’s are required to reside in provided housing, at The National 4-H Youth Conference Center, Gertrude Warren Hall, group housing. Dates of employment are May-August. Travel to and from Washington is at the PA’s own expense.
